That delicious cup of Elevation coffee you’re sipping all started as a single bean, harvested by hand in the mountains of Central America. It’s a wonderful story, but it is when that bean reaches U.S. soil that our work begins.
Summer has already been a busy time for the crew at Melton Trading Co. Our latest shipment of 20,000 lbs. (yes, twenty thousand pounds!) of fresh, green coffee arrived last week, and we’ve been scrambling to get it stored and distributed. After arriving and clearing customs at the Charleston harbor, the 200 burlap sacks were ready for transport.
Now, when you’re dealing with this much coffee, you can’t simply toss it in the backseat of your Chevy Volt (no offense to Volt owners, of course). Many hands went into unloading 200 100-pound sacks of coffee from the shipping container and transferring them into a box truck for transport to our storage and packaging facility in Easley, SC.
Okay, so not all 20,000 pounds went directly to our facility. The gentleman in the photo below is Stan Yoder, coffee roasting genius and proprietor of Openroad Coffee Roastery located in Columbus, North Carolina. Stan is the one responsible for that final roasted flavor simmering in your cup right now. In addition to roasting, Openroad will be serving Elevation coffee in their cafe, so we were happy to seal the deal with the first delivery of our 6,000-lb. annual agreement, plus a few extra hundred pounds to roast for upcoming orders.
It took a lot of work, a lot of sweat, and perhaps a few tears (it’s okay, we’re very non-judgmental), but we were happy to have accomplished this huge undertaking. We want to say thank you to all of the volunteers and helpers who assisted us! And, to the rest of you, here’s to keeping you caffeinated!
